💡 Tips for Running a Successful Virtual IOP
Patients want virtual IOP options. So we got an expert’s top two tips for launching one.
The spike during 2020 is expected but since then, search interest in virtual IOPs has been soaring. US data, six-month rolling average. Source: Google Trends
Dr. Erica Aten is the Intensive Outpatient Program Director at Portland Mental Health & Wellness.
Their virtual IOPs see 500+ patients each year.
Here’s her quick advice for online success.
1. Have well-defined policies and procedures, and communicate them clearly with patients
“Things like attendance and engagement may look different in the virtual space compared to in-person and it’s imperative that you are clear on the requirements set by insurance companies, as well as your clinical team’s methods for assessing symptoms, functionality, risk, etc.”
2. Don’t expect perfection off the bat — rather be ready to resolve snags quickly
“Know that you cannot think of everything upfront and will confront challenges once the program is up and running. In my experience, most challenges will need to be addressed on a fairly quick timeline.”
Special thanks to Erica and Brad at PMHW for these insights.
🧓 The Seniors Are Not Alright
It’s time to call your pop — and provide tailored behavioral health care to the elderly.
US data, six-month rolling average. Source: Google Trends
We’ll get straight to the numbers.
Among Americans aged 60 and older:
One in eight used illicit drugs in the past year
Fewer than one in three who needed SUD treatment received it
And in those aged 65 and older, mental health diagnoses have increased by 57%+ since 2019.
This is the biggest jump of ANY age group — including the notoriously troubled Gen Zers
Except unlike youths, Baby Boomers don’t tend to discuss mental health issues openly. Let alone seek help.
Tailored behavioral health care for the 76M+ older Americans will only become more vital in years to come. Solving the patient acquisition problem is a clear way to start.
Let’s get to your news headlines.
