What we’re watching this week
🍔 Children with autism need feeding disorder treatment solutions
Most states don’t even have a feeding program, and those that do have waitlists of 12+ months, plus huge staffing and reimbursement challenges.
ARFID, or avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, is more common in children with autism. US data, six-month rolling average. Source: Google Trends
About 70% of children with autism have some level of food selectivity.
This isn’t just picky eating — it’s often eliminating entire food groups, which has dire consequences.
Malnutrition can lead to scurvy, growth problems, hearing issues, and even blindness
Feeding disorder behavior can take over people's lives, even as adults
But feeding programs for autistic children are few and far between. Why? Well, to summarize, from a new study:
There’s a severe lack of education and training around feeding disorders
Only four (4!) programs opened within the last five years in the US
There’s also a “concerning trend” of feeding program closures, driven by reimbursement barriers and staffing woes
The reimbursement puzzle: Providers can bill for feeding programs through ABA services or by using day rates and outpatient fee-for-service codes. But, both have their hurdles.
ABA billing has a bunch of hoops to jump through, only for payers to “cut off a kid because they said they’ve been in ABA long enough”
The ease of billing using outpatient rates depends on the payer: some don’t cover it at all, while others will pay but at a rate that “would make every program go under”
So, not good.
But as all-in-one autism therapy models and value-based care grow, we’ll likely see more payer support. Then, there’ll just be the staffing issue to overcome…
🧠 Youth mental health is improving
Finally, some good news: Youth mental health has begun to improve after major pandemic dips, new data shows.
Thanks to Axios for the chart. What we’re looking for here are downward trends, of course.
The good news: In seven of nine states, surveys showed lower rates of sadness and hopelessness in high school students.
The CDC says it’s thanks to more dedicated resources for student well-being during the pandemic
Yes, but: It’s hard to celebrate 35%+ of students feeling “sad or hopeless” for weeks, even if it is an improvement over time.
Plus, LGBTQ+ students and teen girls experienced more mental health challenges last year, according to data from multiple states
